Job Readiness

Youth Services at Oak Park Township provides opportunities for youth ages 14-17 (or still in high school) to develop job skills and gain valuable on-the-job work experience. We meet weekly at OPRFHS in Room 364 to search for jobs, create resumes, learn how to talk about skills and accomplishments to potential employers, and answer interview questions like a pro!

Here are some of the things we talk about:

When should I start looking for a summer job? NOW!  - It is not too early to start! We have resources to help you start your search now, so that by the time everyone is just getting started you're all set for the summer months with a paid job!

OPRFHS Job Fair: How will that help me? - It's scheduled for Thursday, February 23rd, and it's a great opportunity to meet and introduce yourself to those folks who make the hiring decisions, instead of the mostly-faceless internet application process. Dress nice, and bring copies of the resume we'll help you put together.

Do you have any work experience? - Of course you do! You just don't realize it. We'll show you.

How do I answer those questions on an application like, what are my skills? What am I good at? - Using a Transferrable skills chart.doc you'll identify the skills you already have so you can explain to a possible employer why you'd be a good choice to hire.

What should I be taking in school to help me after I graduate? - We have a Skills and Interests Inventory.docx that can help you see where your interests are, so you can choose the classes you'll need to prepare for the career you want.

I just want a job, how do I do that? - Coming to our weekly sessions will help you get a job. We can prepare you with assistance in completing applications, create a resume using Worksheet for Resume.doc,  doing "mock" interviews, and providing job leads for you every week.

Be sure and stop by this Wednesday and start your job search!
